Protect your outdoor plants in the winter in these simple ways

There are several ways in which you can protect and keep your outdoor plants alive in the winter-

1.       To fight against the cold, they need to be kept warm. You can keep your outdoor potted plants in the room and keep the windows closed and also insulate the doors. Paraffin heaters can also be used but it is better to avoid direct heat.

3.       For protecting flower beds and perennials, cloche can be helpful. You can use large row covers for them.

4.       It is advisable to prepare your plants from fall. Feeding them compost during the fall is good as it will break down slowly and improve the soil.

5.       Replacing the old mulch with the new one will insulate the bed. The old mulch can be replaced with row covers, hay, and evergreen boughs.

6.       For lawns and grass, it is advisable that you do not walk on it. The frozen grass blades which are covered with snow and frost, they break under you foot. It is not good for soil as well.

7.       It is not possible to keep all the plants indoors. In order to protect the large potted plants placed outdoors, cover them with bubble wrap or hessian sacks for insulation.

8.       For taller plants, wire cage can be used to protect them. The limbs are drawn closer so that the branches and are surrounded by the cage so, they don’t break when snow covers them.
