Hedge Services Across North Devon

North Devon is where we do most of our work, and hedges are woven into the fabric of this landscape. The region’s mix of coastal gardens, rural lanes and rolling farmland means we work with an enormous variety of hedge types – from clipped beech and leylandii in residential gardens to the thick, layered Devon banks that mark out field boundaries across the countryside. We cover Barnstaple, Bideford, Ilfracombe, Braunton and everywhere in between, for homeowners, farmers and commercial clients alike.

Hedgerow Care in Exmoor National Park

Exmoor has some of the most characterful hedgerows in the country – many of them centuries old, built up on earth banks and packed with native species that support a huge range of wildlife. Working with hedges in and around the National Park means understanding that history and treating it accordingly. Nesting season restrictions shape our calendar, and we always advise on the right timing before any cutting begins. If you’re unsure whether your hedgerow has any ecological designations or protected status, we’re happy to help you work that out before we pick up a tool.

Hedge Maintenance on Dartmoor

The hedgerows and field boundaries around Dartmoor tell the story of centuries of farming on difficult ground. Many are thick, established and long overdue for attention – either neglected or simply hard to access on remote rural land. We’re used to working in these conditions, bringing the right equipment to sites that aren’t always easy to reach, and we take the same care with a Dartmoor farm boundary as we would with a manicured town garden. We cover the full area including Tavistock, Okehampton and Ashburton.

Covering Exeter & the Surrounding Area

Exeter and its surrounding villages have no shortage of hedges that need looking after – garden boundaries that have got away, overgrown front hedges blocking light, or commercial sites that need a regular maintenance schedule to stay presentable. We bring the same attention to detail to every Exeter job that our rural clients expect, working cleanly and efficiently with minimal disruption to you or your neighbours.

FAQs

Do you offer hedge trimming throughout the year?

Yes – we carry out hedge trimming and maintenance across North Devon year round, though the timing of cuts depends on the hedge type and location. The main cutting window runs from late summer through to early spring, outside of nesting season. For hedgerows with higher ecological value, particularly on Exmoor, we’ll always discuss timing with you before any work begins to make sure we’re doing things at the right time of year.

How do I know if my hedgerow is protected?

Hedgerows on rural land may be protected under the Hedgerow Regulations 1997, which restrict the removal of certain hedgerows without notifying your local planning authority first. This is particularly relevant for older, species-rich hedgerows in the countryside around Exmoor and Dartmoor. If you’re unsure about the status of your hedgerow, we’re happy to help you look into it before any work begins.

How hard can you cut back an overgrown hedge?

It depends on the species. Some hedges (like beech, hawthorn and hornbeam) respond well to hard renovation cuts and will regenerate strongly. Others, particularly conifers like leylandii, won’t recover if cut back beyond the green growth. We’ll always assess your hedge before recommending an approach, and in some cases a phased cut over two seasons is the better option to avoid permanent damage.

What happens to the cuttings after the job?

We clear all arisings as part of our service, leaving your garden or land clean and tidy before we go. If you’d prefer cuttings to be left for composting or habitat piles – particularly useful on rural or wildlife-friendly plots – we’re happy to discuss that too.

Are your team fully insured for hedge work?

Yes – Evergreen is fully insured for all hedge trimming, planting and pruning work, giving you complete peace of mind whether we’re working in a residential garden or on a larger rural property. We’re committed to ongoing training and take health and safety seriously on every job.
